Chinese New Year Greetings, Year of The Dragon

The Honourable Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Haji Kifrawi bin Dato Paduka Haji Kifli extends his Chinese New Year greetings to all Officers and Staff of the Supreme Court, Intermediate Court and the Magistrates' Court, as well as all the legal practitioners in Brunei Darussalam.

Recitation of the Al-Quran at the Supreme Court

A Tedarus and Khatam Al-Quran ceremony was held on the 16th Ramadhan 1432H / 17th August 2011 at the High Court-Supreme Court Building in Bandar Seri Begawan.This ceremony was held in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan.
 
The ceremony began with the recitation of the Surah Al-Fatihah followed by the tadarus and the Khatam Al-Quran.
 
THe highlight of the event was the mass recitation of the 30th Juzu' of the Quran. The ceremony concluded with the breaking of the fast followed by a mass Maghrib prayer.
 
Present at the ceremony was the Chief Justice of Brunei Darussalam, the Honourable Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi bin Dato Paduka Hj Kifli, the Honourable High Court Judge Dato Paduka Hj Hairol Arni bin Hj Majid, and the DIrector of the State Judiciary Department Hj Serudin bin Hj Timbang.

On 1st March 2010, the Juvenile Court of Brunei Darussalam was established following the enforcementof the Children and Young Persons Order 2006 (CYPO). This Act introduced asignificant change in dealing with young offenders under the age of 18 and alsoprovides for children and young persons in need of care and protection.

The Juvenile Court only assumes jurisdiction over children and young persons. They are known as Juveniles. The Children and Young Persons Order 2006 defines a child and a young person asfollows:

  • ‘Child’ as being a person who is below the age of 14 years
  • ‘Young Person’ as being a person who is 14 years of age or above and below the age of 18

The criminal jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court is spelt out in s.10 of the CYPO. It tries criminal offences committed by Children or Young Persons, except where:

  • The offence is triable only by the High Court; or
  • The Child or Young Person is jointly charged with another person who is above 18 years of age.
