The celebration for the opening of the Legal Year is an
annual event organized by the Civil Court. This ceremony is usually held in the
first quarter of each year and the aim is to mark the opening of the Legal
Year, and now is the time for the court, the Attorney General and the Law
Society to give recommendations for actions or plans to be implemented throughout
the year. The ceremony also provides an opportunity for all legal practitioners
[the Attorney General and the Law Society] to present the annual reports to the
public.
As in the previous years, the event included the Guard of
Honour from the Royal Brunei Police Force which was inspected by the Honorable
Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Haji Kifrawi bin Dato Paduka Haji Kifli. The
guests reconvened at the main High Court room where His Lordship the Chief
Justice delivered his speech and was followed by a speech made by the Honorable
Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar
Dato Seri Paduka Haji Salleh and also by the President of Law Society of Brunei
Darussalam, Haji Muhammad Zainidi bin Haji Abdul Hamid.
To commemorate this celebration, the Judiciary, the Attorney
General and Law Society have organized sports activities which include Bowling,
Badminton, Netball and Futsal.
Gracing the ceremony was HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri
Hajah Muta-Wakillah Hayatul Bolkiah binti KDYMM Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji
Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah. Also present were Attorney General, the
Syari’e Chief Judge, High Court Judges, Syariah High Court Judges, the
Commissioner of police, the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces,
Diplomats, Permanent and Deputy Permanent Secretaries, the Director of the
State Judiciary Department and other Heads of Government Departments, the
Intermediate Court Judges, Registrars and Magistrates of the Supreme Court,
Syariah Subordinate Court Judges, Deputy Public Prosecutors of the Attorney
General’s Chambers, Private Lawyers, invited guests, and staff of the State
Judiciary Department. In addition, the Court also received guests from
several schools which comprises of students and teachers. The Honorable
Registrar of the Singapore Supreme Court, Mr. Foo Chee Hock was also present to
witness the event.
To bless the ceremony, the Surah Al-Fatihah and the closing
doa was lead by Yang Mulia Mudim Haji Awang Amran bin Haji Salleh, Mosque
Affairs Officer.

On 1st March 2010, the Juvenile Court of Brunei Darussalam was established following the enforcementof the Children and Young Persons Order 2006 (CYPO). This Act introduced asignificant change in dealing with young offenders under the age of 18 and alsoprovides for children and young persons in need of care and protection. The Juvenile Court only assumes jurisdiction over children and young persons. They are known as Juveniles. The Children and Young Persons Order 2006 defines a child and a young person asfollows: - ‘Child’ as being a person who is below the age of 14 years
- ‘Young Person’ as being a person who is 14 years of age or above and below the age of 18
The criminal jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court is spelt out in s.10 of the CYPO. It tries criminal offences committed by Children or Young Persons, except where: - The offence is triable only by the High Court; or
- The Child or Young Person is jointly charged with another person who is above 18 years of age.

The officers and staff of the Civil Courts of the State Judiciary Department organised their first Family Fun Day at the Muara Beach on the 5th December 2010. Attending the Family Fun Day were the families of the judicial officers and staff of the Civil Courts of the State Judiciary Department.
The Judiciary Family Fun Day was held to forge closer working ties amongst the officers and staff and also to foster a sense of family togetherness.
Present during this event were the Honourable Chief Justice, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi bin Dato Paduka Haji Kifli, and his spouse, Datin Hjh Zainah binti Hj Bujang, The Honourable Chief Registrar Pg Hjh Rostaina Binti Hj Duraman and the Honourable Chief Majistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri bin POKSMDSP Hj Abidin.
The event started with an early morning aerobics session where the Honourable Chief Justice and his spouse participated in the aerobics together with the officers, staff and their families members.
A variety of games were played participated by officers and staff of the Judiciary. The event ended at Mid-day with a photograph session.
