The Brunei Darussalam Judiciary is saddened to announce the passing of the former Chief Justice of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Seri Paduka Mohammad Saied on Friday, 1st February 2013 at his residence in England. He was 82.
Dato Seri Paduka Mohammed Saied first served in the Brunei Darussalam courts in 1984 when he was appointed as a Coroner for an inquest. From 1986 to 1987, he was seconded from the Hong Kong Judiciary to serve as Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam.
His service was renewed when he was appointed the Chief Justice of Brunei Darussalam in 2001. He served in his capacity of Chief Justice until his retirement in 2009. He was a firm believer in the rule of law and won the respect of everyone through his sense of Justice and devotion to duty.
The Brunei Darussalam Judiciary and the legal community conveys its condolences and sympathies to Datin Akhtar Saied and the family of the late Dato Seri Paduka Mohammad Saied.

A delegation from the Brunei Darussalam attended the inaugural Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Conference in Singapore. The conference was organised by the Singapore Judiciary, the Law Society of Singapore, the Singapore Mediation Centre, the Singapore Academy of Law and the Community Mediation Centre of the Ministry of Law and was held in the Supreme Court in Singapore over two days on 4th and 5th October. Heading the delegation was The Honourable Justice Dato Paduka Hj Hairol Arni bin Hj Abdul Majid together with Senior Magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin PDJLD Hj. Kefli and Senior Registrar Hazarena bte POKSJ DP Hj Hurairah. The conference theme was 'The 5 C's – Collaboration, communication, consensus, co-operation, and conclusion’. Speakers at the workshop included Judges, Judicial Officers, experienced mediators and other experts and members of varying professions. The conference aimed at enhancing knowledge and skills to legal practitioners in the area of alternative dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration and collaborative cooperation. Specialised topics presented during the conference included “The Future of ADR in 2020”, “Comparative ADR in the Asia-Pacific Region”, “Mediation Advocacy: Getting the best results for your clients without going to trial”, “ADR and the Criminal Justice System”, “Through the mirror of experience: Advanced mediation tools and techniques”, “Collaborative Law – Resolving Disputes without Trial”, “Lawyers as Negotiators – The good and bad news”, “Developing the Arbitration scene: Access to Justice”, “Mediation: Evaluative or Facilitative or both?” and “The Court’s role in Promoting ADR: Trends and Development around the world”. Alternative Dispute Resolution gives parties alternative options and control over their decisions during disputes without resulting to the need to go through the traditional Court process, saves costs and time. Currently the ADR is Brunei is available through mediation and arbitration. With the introduction of the Small Claims Tribunal in Brunei in the near future, mediation will become part of the Court process to encourage parties to reach an amicable settlement instead of resulting to trial for certain cases.
