The opening of the Legal Year is an annual celebration conducted by the Brunei Supreme Court. The pomp and ceremony of the event serves to mark the primacy of the Judiciary and the role of law in our society. It is a time of reflection for the members of the Judiciary and members of the Legal Profession as a whole. We look back on the progress, developments and challenges of the past year, and look forward to another fruitful legal year and brace ourselves for the challenges ahead. It is a time of reaffirmation to the Rule of Law and the independence of the Judiciary. At the same time, members of the Legal Profession also gather together to rededicate themselves to the ideals and principles of profession.
This year, as well as celebrating the Opening of the Legal Year 2009,
we are also celebrating the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the Supreme
Court Building, a momentous occasion in the history of our Judiciary.
On 15th March 1984, the opening of the new Supreme Court Building was
officiated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mui'zzaddin
Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. In line
with His Majesty's Titah, since then the Judiciary has grown from
strength to strength, with the construction of new modern court
buildings and a more “Bruneian” face of the Judiciary. Currently we
have 3 Bruneian High court judges, 1 Intermediate Court Judge and 11
Judicial Officers.
In conjunction with the Silver Jubilee, we are relaunching our
Judicial website, which promises to be more informative and
comprehensive, which includes updated Cause Lists and Practice
Directions and Circulars. A permanent Gallery Exhibition is also set up
at the lobby of the Supreme Court Building for public viewing.
